Say which language helps
Some people welcome appearance-based conversation; others find it distracting, uncomfortable or irrelevant. You can tell a trainer that you want feedback on the task rather than comments about your body. A request such as 'Please keep feedback about the movement and what I am learning' gives them a clear direction.
You do not need to explain why a phrase bothers you before asking for it to stop. If a trainer uses a compliment you dislike, name the preference rather than debating whether the intention was positive. The question is what makes the session workable for you.
Discuss measurements separately. Ask what a proposed measurement is for, whether it is optional and how the information will be used. Agree on ways to review progress that relate to your goals. Attendance, confidence with equipment and the ability to follow a taught setup can be relevant observations without becoming a judgement about appearance.
Keep the agreement visible
For ongoing coaching, ask the trainer to remember the preference in their notes. If a different person covers a session, restate it briefly at the start. A provider cannot respond to a preference they have not been told, but you should not have to renegotiate a clearly expressed boundary every visit.
If the language does not change
Notice whether the trainer changes their language after the conversation. A genuine misunderstanding can be corrected. Repeatedly returning to unwanted comments, teasing or treating your request as a lack of commitment is a reason to reconsider the arrangement and raise it with the provider if appropriate.
The preference can be narrow or broad. You might welcome discussion of a particular performance goal while declining photographs, weigh-ins or comparisons with other clients. Write down the distinction if it helps. Coaching requires useful communication; it does not require accepting every traditional gym phrase or every method a trainer happens to favour. You can choose an arrangement that leaves your attention on the skills you came to learn.
